Polygonum cuspidatum, a Chinese medicine, is the dried rhizome and root of Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb.et Zucc. of the Polygonaceae family. It is collected in spring and autumn, the fibrous roots are removed, washed, cut into short sections or thick slices while fresh, and dried in the sun. It is distributed in Northwest China, East China, Central China, South China and Southwest China. It has the effects of promoting dampness and relieving jaundice, clearing away heat and detoxifying, dispersing blood stasis and relieving pain, relieving cough and reducing phlegm. It is used for damp-heat jaundice, stranguria, leucorrhea, rheumatic pain, carbuncle, burns caused by water or fire, amenorrhea, abdominal mass, sprain, and cough caused by lung heat.
